In case you’ve been hiding under a rock this past month or so, DC Comics is relaunching their universe with 52 number one issues in a major initiative loosely (and imaginatively) called “The New 52”.
The uber-traditionalist among comic fans have cried that DC is ignoring their rich history by giving a face lift to continuity. In actuality, they’ve done this before, both in the 50’s and then again in the 80s. All of which brings us to Ground Zero’s Graphic Novel of the Month for September: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
You see, in the mid 80s, comic fans were so enamored with the idea of a single, continuous universe, that DC decided to address it with a universe spanning (and destroying in many cases) saga that set the stage for a similar “reboot”. It was one of the first major epics that cross over into numerous other books and altered continuity for better and worse.
Written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated in the usual meticulous fashion by George Perez, Crisis was a watershed event in comics history and the forerunner of almost every epic that came after it. With the New 52 effectively launching a new era in the DC Universe, what better time to see where tumultuous birth of the one it replaced.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is on sale for $15 Off through the month of September.
